The icon has been many times used as a devotional image to pray to the Mother of God for Her protection of the people of Rome during times of plague or threats from enemies. The name can be translated as, "Holy Mary, Health of the Roman People." The people of Rome have given the icon another name - "Sancta Maria, Salus Populi Mundi." This title means, "Holy Mary, Health of the People of the Whole World."
